Buying Stuff

"If men liked shopping they would call it research" - Cynthia Nelms
I've been doing a lot of research on-line this week. There are three basic rules to on-line shopping for bike stuff.

1. Never make a list of what you need. This simply limits the creativity of browsing for what you want. Who knew you needed that 1970's Team Peugot merino wool retro Tour de France cycling top when you went on line for a puncture repair outfit.

2. Never set a budget. Throw lots of numbers around ranging from £1 to £2,000 but then just spend what has to be spent to buy what you want. Never, ever only spend the lowest number that you threw around and only buy what you need. If asked, you only spent less than you said and only bought what you needed.

3. Make your purchase look small. Get your on-line purchases delivered to work or to multiple friends' and relations' addresses or as a minimum choose the 'deliver in lots of small packages' option. NEVER choose the 'one huge package delivered in the evening when my wife is at home' option.

Terry's Top Tips for online purchasing have been honed from years of experience. The value of this advice may fluctuate if you do not keep up your regular payments on your on-line accounts.

  1. There is another one. I'll give it to you for free.

    4. Share the booty. Pick out something for your spouse too, preferably something s/he has been wanting. This helps soften the "you shouldn't have" response. Bonus points if you find it at a good price, which sends the message that all of your purchases were "good finds."

  2. Top quality tip. I have submitted to the 'Terry Tortoise Top Tip Committee' and the good news is that it has passed muster and is in. :0)
